If you’re booking a Maldives resort for the snorkelling, the star rating and the nightly price won’t tell you what you need to know. Price tracks the villa and the service; it does not track the reef. So we measured the reef instead — every registered resort’s house reef, scored from satellite on the same three things, and ranked on the result.

What the list is — and isn’t

It’s the reef, not the resort. This ranks the water each resort sits on, measured the same way for every property from the Allen Coral Atlas and NOAA record — reef cover (adjusted for recent heat stress), reef structure, and how easily you can reach the drop-off from shore. It is not a ranking of the hotels themselves; a resort can be superb and sit on a middling reef, and the two are different questions.

It’s modelled from satellite, and honest about it. No reef in the index has been surveyed in the water. The score tells you the reef’s measured condition, not the exact fish you’ll see on the day. Every reef page says so.

South Ari keeps appearing for a reason. Notice how many of these sit in South Ari — it’s one of the country’s strongest atolls for reef, which is why it recurs. If the reef is your priority, the atoll is a better starting filter than the brand.

One thing worth knowing before you pay resort prices

The single best-measured house reef in the whole country isn’t on this list — because it isn’t a resort. It’s a guesthouse, scoring 9.9, higher than every resort here. If the reef matters more to you than the villa, that’s worth a look.
