The best house reef in the Maldives is a guesthouse, not a resort

Here’s a fact the resorts would rather you didn’t have: the best-measured house reef in the entire Maldives isn’t at a five-star resort. It’s at a guesthouse — Suvaasa Inn in South Ari, scoring 9.9, higher than the top resort in the country.

Maldives guesthouses sit on local, inhabited islands and cost a fraction of a private-island resort. What they lack in overwater villas they very often make up for in exactly the thing most people are actually flying for: the reef. And because guesthouses cluster on shared island reefs, a whole cluster of budget stays can sit on the same superb water.

We measured every one of them. Here are the guesthouse islands with the best-measured reefs.

Why a guesthouse reef can beat a resort’s

It comes down to what we actually measure, and what a satellite can’t be sold. A Reef Conditions score is reef cover, reef structure and shore access — measured the same way whether the property above it charges £80 a night or £2,000. The reef doesn’t know what you paid. A guesthouse on a genuinely excellent stretch of reef scores exactly as high as a resort on the same water would.

Two honest caveats, because this is not a free lunch:

• A shared reef is shared. On a busy guesthouse island the same reef carries many more snorkellers than a private resort reef. The measured condition is the score you see; how crowded it feels on the day is not something a satellite measures.
• It’s modelled, not surveyed. As with every reef in the index, the score is from satellite — no reef has been checked in the water. It measures the reef’s condition, not the exact fish on the day.

So — is a guesthouse the smarter call?

If the villa and the service are the point, book the resort. If the reef is the point, the numbers say you can pay far less and swim over better water — you just need to know which islands. That’s the whole list above.
