Can you snorkel straight from the beach in the Maldives?
At some resorts the reef is a few fin-kicks away; at others it's a boat ride. How to tell which — measured from satellite, before you book.
Everyone pictures the same thing: step off your deck, put your face in the water, and there’s the reef. For some Maldives properties that’s exactly right. For others it’s a fantasy the photos quietly sell you — the coral is real, but it’s a boat ride away, and the water off your beach is a shallow sand-floored lagoon with nothing to see.
The difference is measurable, and it’s the single most useful thing to know before you book a resort “for the snorkelling.”
Why “house reef” doesn’t mean “off the beach”
A house reef is just the reef the property sits on. It says nothing about how far you’d swim to reach the good part. Two things get in the way, and both are visible from satellite:
- The reef flat — a shallow shelf of dead or sparse reef between the beach and the drop-off. On some islands it’s a few metres. On others it’s a few hundred, and you’re wading over rubble in ankle-deep water before it gets interesting.
- The distance to the slope — the reef only really comes alive at the drop-off, where the shelf falls away into deeper water and the fish and coral concentrate. Close drop-off, easy snorkel. Distant drop-off, a long haul or a boat.
A guest review can’t tell you either. It can gush about the snorkelling and still be describing a place you had to be shuttled to.
How we measure it
One of the three things our Reef Conditions score measures is exactly this — shore access. For every registered property we measure, from the mapped reef:
- how many metres from the shoreline to the reef slope, and
- how much of the reef in between is shallow flat you’d have to cross.
A reef can score beautifully on coral cover and still score poorly here — gorgeous water, but not one you can reach from your towel. Both facts matter, and only one of them shows up in the brochure.
